Cranking Leak Solenoid: Prelude

  1. Disconnect vacuum hose from cranking leak solenoid. With ignition off, apply vacuum to solenoid using vacuum pump. Vacuum should hold steady.
  2. If vacuum does not hold steady, check for short to voltage at cranking leak solenoid valve. If there is no voltage, replace cranking leak solenoid valve and retest.
  3. With vacuum pump still attached and showing steady vacuum, turn ignition switch to "START" position. Vacuum should bleed off.
  4. If vacuum remains steady, check for voltage at cranking leak solenoid valve, with ignition switch in "START" position. If voltage is present, replace cranking leak solenoid valve. If voltage is not present, disconnect 8-wire connector at control box.
  5. Measure voltage between Blue/Red (pos.) and Black (neg.) terminals of harness while ignition switch is in the "START" position. If voltage is present, repair short in harness between solenoid and connector. If voltage is not present, measure voltage between ground and Blue/Red terminal while ignition switch is in "START" position.
  6. If battery voltage is now present, repair open in Black wire between control box and ground. If voltage is not present, check for open in Blue/Red wire between control box connector and ignition switch No. 1 crank fuse.
