Ignition System - TOYO DENSO Electronic: Overhaul: Disassembly

  1. Disconnect vacuum hoses from distributor. Disconnect primary wires from ignition coil. On fuel injected engines, disconnect crankshaft sensor connector at distributor. On all models, remove distributor cap and spark plug wires. Remove distributor hold-down hardware, then remove distributor.
  2. Carefully pry upward on reluctor with 2 screwdrivers, cushioned with shop rags to prevent damage to distributor housing. Use care not to damage reluctor or stator.
  3. Remove vacuum advance diaphragm arm snap ring. Remove vacuum advance diaphragm mounting screws. Pull out diaphragm. Remove ignitor cover and pull out ignitor. Remove 2 screws and remove pick-up coil, stator, and breaker plate assembly. Remove rotor shaft.
  4. Slide off pin retainer being careful not to stretch it. Remove roll pin and coupling from distributor shaft. On fuel injected engines, remove 3 screws and crank angle sensor housing. Etch an alignment mark on crank angle sensor rotor.
  5. Remove roll pin and crank angle sensor rotor from distributor shaft (using screwdrivers). On all models, remove shaft from housing. Remove thrust washer, thrust plate, ball bearing, and oil seal (if used). Inspect and replace parts as necessary.
