Steering Column: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. If necessary, remove air bag inflator module, steering wheel, clockspring coil and combination switch. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG INFLATOR MODULE, STEERING WHEEL and CLOCKSPRING COIL & COMBINATION SWITCH.
  2. Remove steering column hole cover and knee bolster. Remove upper universal joint pinch bolt. Separate upper and lower steering shafts. Unplug wiring connectors to steering column.
  3. Remove steering column mounting nuts. On A/T equipped models, remove shift interlock cable clamp screw at rear of ignition switch. Disconnect shift interlock cable from ignition switch. On all models, pull steering column from vehicle.
NOTE: Steering column and shaft are serviced as an assembly only. DO NOT attempt to disassemble shaft from steering column.
