Poor Fuel Economy
If fuel economy is lower than expected during a road test, or has decreased since previous road tests, check the following items:
- Perform VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION .
- Ensure air intake system is not restricted or leaking.
- Check vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, leaks, restrictions, and proper connections. Ensure vacuum hoses are correctly routed as shown on Vehicle Emission Control Information label.
- Check for continuous A/C or defroster operation.
- Check tires for proper inflation.
- Check for frequent heavy loading of vehicle.
- Check for heavy acceleration and high speeds.
- Check variety, quality and alcohol content of fuel.
- Ensure correct fuel pressure.
- Check for faulty spark plugs or spark plug wires.
- Ensure ignition timing and controls are working properly.
- Check engine coolant level.
- Ensure engine thermostat is correct temperature range and operating properly.
- Check transmission shift pattern.
- Check for proper speedometer calibration.
- Check for dragging brakes.
- Check if any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) apply.
