Poor Fuel Economy

If fuel economy is lower than expected during a road test, or has decreased since previous road tests, check the following items:

• Perform VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION .
• Ensure air intake system is not restricted or leaking.
• Check vacuum hoses for splits, kinks, leaks, restrictions, and proper connections. Ensure vacuum hoses are correctly routed as shown on Vehicle Emission Control Information label.
• Check for continuous A/C or defroster operation.
• Check tires for proper inflation.
• Check for frequent heavy loading of vehicle.
• Check for heavy acceleration and high speeds.
• Check variety, quality and alcohol content of fuel.
• Ensure correct fuel pressure.
• Check for faulty spark plugs or spark plug wires.
• Ensure ignition timing and controls are working properly.
• Check engine coolant level.
• Ensure engine thermostat is correct temperature range and operating properly.
• Check transmission shift pattern.
• Check for proper speedometer calibration.
• Check for dragging brakes.
• Check if any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) apply.
