Steering Column R & I: Installation

  1. Insert column through floorboard into "U" joint. Install upper bracket retaining bolts. Install steering column floorboard bracket bolts.
  2. Tighten column bracket nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Tighten "U" joint pinch bolt. Tighten column floorboard bracket bolts. Connect all electrical connectors.
CAUTION: Clockspring coil will be damaged if steering wheel is rotated beyond normal number of revolutions. If clockspring is not removed prior to steering column removal, ensure ignition remains locked.


  1. Connect lower steering shaft splines with universal joint on upper steering shaft. On A/T equipped models, turn ignition switch to ACC position. Connect shift lock cable to ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and tighten cable clamp screw.
  2. Install steering column upper and lower mount nuts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install universal joint bolt and tighten to specification.
  3. Reconnect steering column wiring harness connectors. Install knee bolster. Install clockspring coil/combination switch, steering wheel and air bag inflator module (if removed). Connect negative battery cable and enable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
