Steering Column R & I: Installation
- Insert column through floorboard into "U" joint. Install upper bracket retaining bolts. Install steering column floorboard bracket bolts.
- Tighten column bracket nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten "U" joint pinch bolt. Tighten column floorboard bracket bolts. Connect all electrical connectors.
CAUTION:
Clockspring coil will be damaged if steering wheel is rotated beyond normal number of revolutions. If clockspring is not removed prior to steering column removal, ensure ignition remains locked.
- Connect lower steering shaft splines with universal joint on upper steering shaft. On A/T equipped models, turn ignition switch to ACC position. Connect shift lock cable to ignition switch. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position and tighten cable clamp screw.
- Install steering column upper and lower mount nuts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install universal joint bolt and tighten to specification.
- Reconnect steering column wiring harness connectors. Install knee bolster. Install clockspring coil/combination switch, steering wheel and air bag inflator module (if removed). Connect negative battery cable and enable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
