Diagnosis & Repair

  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Select CLEAR INFORMATION function. Operate vehicle within FREEZE FRAME conditions. If DTC P0461 resets, go to next step. If DTC P0461 does not reset, check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article.
  2. Remove rear seat cushion. Disconnect fuel level sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage of Yellow/Red wire (PCM side). If reading is 5.5-7 volts, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, check Yellow/Red wire for open or short to ground. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, go to step 6).
  3. Reconnect fuel level sensor harness connector. Remove fuel tank. Disconnect fuel level sensor connector at sensor. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage of Yellow/Red wire (PCM side). If reading is 5.5-7 volts, check ground connection at fuel tank. Repair as necessary. If ground connection is okay, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 5).
  4. Remove fuel tank level sensor from fuel tank. Reconnect sensor harness connector. Monitor fuel tank level parameter on scan tool while moving sensor float from empty to full several times. If reading on scan tool changes steadily with no irregularities, check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. If reading is erratic or does not change, replace fuel level sensor. Retest system.
  5. Check for open or short to ground in Yellow/Red wire between fuel level sensor and harness connector (located under rear seat cushion). Repair as necessary. Retest system.
  6. With fuel level sensor disconnected, disconnect PCM connector C3. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage at PCM connector C3, terminal No. 10 (Yellow/Red wire). If reading is 5.5-7 volts, replace PCM. Retest system. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  7. Check Yellow/Red wire for an open or short to ground between PCM and fuel gauge. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, see appropriate INSTRUMENT PANEL article for diagnosis.
