Pinion Preload

  1. Back off rack adjusting screw. See Figure. Tighten rack adjusting screw until it is snug. Using an INCH-lb. torque wrench and Socket (J-34871), measure rotational torque of pinion gear.
  2. Torque reading is 11 INCH lbs. (1.2 N.m). If torque reading is greater than specification, back off adjusting screw (up to 90 degrees or a 1/4 turn). If torque reading is less than specification, tighten adjusting screw until specified torque is achieved. Ensure rack moves smoothly. Install cap on adjusting screw.
