Steering Column: Inspection

Ensure upper steering column mounting bracket capsules are not loose. If capsules are loose, replace steering column assembly. Measure upper steering shaft length and lower steering shaft length to determine if either assembly should be replaced. See Figure . Replace steering column if upper steering shaft length is less than 30.63" (778.0 mm). Replace steering column if distance between upper shaft steering wheel end and top of steering column tube is less than 3.90" (99.0 mm). Replace lower shaft if length is less than 11.30" (287.0 mm) for models with power steering or 13.07" (332.0 mm) for models with manual steering. If lower shaft runout is greater than .079" (2.0 mm), replace lower shaft.
