Transaxle Unit

  1. Thoroughly clean transaxle exterior. Drain fluid and remove torque converter. Place transaxle in holding fixture. Remove selector bracket, vehicle speed sensor and oil level gauge.
  2. Remove oil pan, oil filter and side cover. Remove wiring harness grommet. Remove valve body assembly. See Figure. Remove converter housing. Remove differential assembly.
  3. Remove oil pump, brake band, and input shaft assembly with high and reverse clutches. See Figure. Compress servo cover and remove servo snap ring. Remove servo assembly.
  4. Remove low one-way clutch from transaxle case. Remove output gear. Using Low-Reverse Brake Spring Compressor and Bridge (J-38298 and J-35279-1), compress low-reverse brake piston. See Figure. Remove snap ring and tools. Remove front planetary and low-reverse brake assembly. See Figure. Remove remaining planetary, snap rings, clutch assemblies and thrust washers. See Figure.
  5. Remove staking from idler gear lock nut. Move shift lever to Park position. Remove lock nut and remove idler gear. Remove reduction gear race housing bolts. Using Gear Puller (J-38297), remove reduction gear. Remove idler gear outer bearing race from housing. See Figure. Remove drum support.
