Alternator & Regulator - NIPPONDENSO: Description

Metro uses a Nippondenso 50-amp alternator. See Fig 1. Prizm uses either a Nippondenso 60-amp alternator or Delco-Remy alternator. See Fig 2. For information on Delco-Remy alternator, refer to the ALTERNATOR & REGULATOR - DELCO-REMY article in this section.

Alternator uses an internal voltage regulator. The Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator is a solid state unit mounted inside alternator to rear end frame. Voltage regulator voltage cannot be adjusted.

Two brushes carry current through 2 slip rings to field coil mounted on rotor. Stator windings are assembled inside a laminated core forming part of alternator drive and frame assemblies. A rectifier bridge containing 6 diodes (8 diodes on Prizm) is connected to stator windings.
