Steering Gear: Inspection

  1. Check steering rack for runout by placing rack on "V" blocks and using a dial indicator, measure runout at center of rack. Maximum runout is .012" (.30 mm).
  2. Measure clearance between control valve shaft and bushing. If clearance exceeds .0059" (.150 mm), replace bushing. Remove oil seal. Press in new oil seal. Temporarily install control valve shaft and ensure shaft rotates smoothly.
  3. Using a small screwdriver, remove Teflon rings on rack piston and control valve. On rack, carefully expand new ring with fingers and install. Snug down ring with fingers so it fits tightly in groove.
  4. On control valve, expand Teflon rings and install on control valve. Coat Teflon rings with power steering fluid and allow rings to seat on cylinder. Install oil seal and spacer into cylinder.
NOTE: Coat all Teflon rings and "O" rings with power steering fluid.
