Alternator & Regulator: Description
Metro uses a Nippondenso 50-amp alternator. See Fig 1. Prizm and Prizm GSi use a Nippondenso 60-amp alternator. See Fig 2. Alternator utilizes an internal voltage regulator. The Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator is a solid state unit mounted inside alternator to rear end frame. Voltage regulator voltage cannot be adjusted.
Two brushes carry current through 2 slip rings to field coil mounted on rotor. Stator windings are assembled inside a laminated core forming part of alternator drive and frame assemblies. A rectifier bridge containing 6 diodes (8 diodes on Prizm and Prizm GSi) is connected to stator windings.
