Starter - Reduction Gear: Overhaul: Inspection: Commutator

  1. Using "V" blocks and dial indicator, check commutator runout (out-of-round). Ensure runout is NOT more than .002" (.05 mm). Turn commutator/armature on lathe until runout (out-of-round) is within specification.
  2. Diameter wear or cutting limit of commutator is 1.14" (29.0 mm) for A/T starters and 1.06" (27.0 mm) for M/T starters. If commutator is cut down more than .008" (.20 mm), insulating mica should be undercut to depth of approximately .015-.031" (.38 -.78 mm).
