Steering Column: Removal

  1. Manufacturer recommends removing steering wheel and combination switch before removing steering column. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD  and COMBINATION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    WARNING: When moving or carrying air bag module, ensure outward side (pad surface area) is away from you. DO NOT  store air bag module upside-down. Accidental deployment could cause serious injury. Store air bag module with pad surface upward and away from work area. DO NOT  disassemble or tamper with air bag module assembly.
  2. Disconnect necessary electrical wiring at fuse box. Fuse box is located at left side of instrument panel.
  3. Remove steering joint cover. See Figure . Remove bolt at steering joint-to-steering column shaft. Remove nuts from steering column mounts. Remove steering column assembly.
NOTE: Steering column length should be measured to determine if assembly should be replaced. See Figure . Replace steering column if distance is less than 20.96" (532.4 mm).
