Solenoid Pull-In Coil Test

  1. Disconnect starter field lead from solenoid. Ensure field lead DOES NOT touch starter housing. See Figure. Using 12-volt battery, connect negative battery lead to solenoid field lead terminal.
  2. Connect another negative battery lead to the starter housing. Connect positive battery lead to the solenoid ST (start) terminal. The pinion gear should extend quickly and completely when the solenoid is energized. If the pinion gear DOES NOT operate as described, replace the solenoid. If the pinion gear operates as previously described, perform both the SOLENOID HOLD-IN COIL TEST  and the PINION GEAR RETURN TEST .
