No-Load Test

  1. Remove starter. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  in this article. Connect ammeter in series between starter and fully charged 12-volt battery. See Fig 1.
  2. Connect remote starter or jumper wire to battery and ST (start) terminal of solenoid. DO NOT  crank starter for more than 5 seconds. Starter current draw should be less than 50 amps. Ensure pinion gear extends quickly and completely.
  3. Starter should spin smoothly. If starter does not operate as described, replace starter.

NOTE: Perform solenoid tests with starter assembled and field lead from starter disconnected at the solenoid.
CAUTION: DO NOT  engage starter solenoid for more than 5 seconds during testing or damage to coil winding may result.
