Power Transfer Unit Case Cleaning and Inspection
- NOTE:
The case halves, internal gears and bearings are not serviceable components. If damage is present, the power transfer unit must be replaced as an assembly.
Clean the power transfer unit case housing.
- Power Transfer Unit Case Housing Threaded Bolt Holes (1) - Repair any damaged threads.
- Power Transfer Unit Case Housing Sealing Surfaces (2) - Repair small scratches or nicks with a soft stone.
- Power Transfer Unit Input Shaft Seal Surface (3) - Inspect for thread damage
- Power Transfer Unit Idler Shaft Tube Seal Surface (4) - Inspect for thread damage
- Power Transfer Unit Drain Plug Hole (5) - Inspect for thread damage
- Inspect the rear output shaft for end play. If end play is present, replace the power transfer unit as an assembly.
- Inspect the splines for damage or excessive wear.
- Power Transfer Unit Rear Output Shaft and Splines (6) - Rotate the shaft by hand. The shaft should rotate freely with no roughness felt within the bearings. If roughness within bearings is present, replace the power transfer unit as an assembly.
- NOTE:

Clean the power transfer unit extension housing in cleaning solvent and air dry.
- Power Transfer Unit Input Shaft Bearing- Front (1) - Repair small scratches or nicks with a soft stone.
- Power Transfer Unit Extension Housing (2) - Inspect for excessive wear, cracks, or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Case Fill Plug Hole (3) - Inspect for thread damage
- Idler Gear Shaft Tube O-ring Sealing Surface (4) - Inspect for excessive wear, cracks, or damage.
- NOTE:

Clean the power transfer unit input shaft in cleaning solvent and air dry.
- Power Transfer Unit Input Shaft Bearing- Rear (1) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Idler Shaft Gear Teeth (2) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Idler Gear Shaft Access Tube Surface (3) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Input Shaft Bearing- Rear (4) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- NOTE:
The case halves, internal gears and bearings are not serviceable components. If damage is present, the power transfer unit must be replaced as an assembly.
Clean the power transfer unit idler shaft in cleaning solvent and air dry.
- Power Transfer Unit Shift Sleeve (1) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Shift Actuator Shaft (2) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Shift Actuator Gear (3) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
- Power Transfer Unit Shift Actuator Locker (4) - Inspect for excessive wear or damage.
The power transfer unit case assembly must be replaced if damage is present.
