Installation Procedure

- Lubricate the differential side bearings with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
- Install the differential drive pinion and gear, if serviced. Refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
- Install the differential side bearings, if serviced. Refer to Front Differential Case Disassemble .
- Reinstall the left and right hand bearing shims to their locations using a light coase of grease to hold them in position.
- Place the case, with the bearing cups installed, into the axle housing. Using a dead blow hammer to move the differential into the installed position.
- Install the bearing caps (2) and bolts (1). Do not torque the bearing cap bolts (1) at this time.
- Adjust the differential side bearing preload. Refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
- Adjust the backlash. Refer to Backlash Inspection and Adjustment .
- Perform the gear tooth contact pattern check. Refer to Gear Tooth Contact Pattern Inspection .
- Tighten the bearing cap bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
- Install the front drive axle inner shaft. Refer to Front Drive Axle Inner Shaft Replacement .
- Install the front axle housing cover gasket.
- Install the NEW front axle housing cover and bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).
- Fill the front differential with fluid. Refer to Front Axle Lubricant Replacement .
- Install the front axle assembly to the vehicle. Refer to Front Axle Replacement .
NOTE:
Support eh case in order to keep the case from falling out of the axle housing.
