Installation Procedure
- Install the upper intermediate steering shaft to the steering column.
- Install the upper intermediate shaft retaining nut and bolt to the steering.
Tighten: Tighten the nut to 47 N.m (35 lb ft).
- Remove the steering column from J 41352 . See Special Tools .
- Install the steering column.
- Tighten the steering column lower fasteners before you tighten the steering column upper fasteners. Failure to do this can damage the steering column.
- Tighten the steering column fasteners to the specified torque. Overtightening the upper steering column fasteners could affect the steering column collapse.
- Install the retaining nuts that secure the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
- Install the retaining nuts that secure the steering column to the upper support bracket.
Tighten:
- Tighten the toe plate retaining nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
- Tighten the upper support bracket retaining nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).
- Connect the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness. Install the center screw.
Tighten: Tighten the center screw to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
- Unlock the steering column by removing J 42640 from the lower trim cover access hole.
- For vehicles with a column shift, install the range selector cable from the steering column. Refer to Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (Column Shift) or Automatic Transmission Range Selector Cable Replacement (Console Shift) in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E.
- Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in SIR.

CAUTION:
In order to ensure the intended function of the steering column in a vehicle during a crash and in order to avoid personal injury to the driver, perform the following:
