Installation Procedure

  1. Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.

    Install the steering gear to the frame and install the retaining bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the steering gear retaining bolts to 135 N.m (100 lb ft).

  2. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement (4WD) , Pitman Arm Replacement (RWD) in Steering Linkage.
  3. Install the engine protection shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Protection Shield Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  4. Remove the safety stands.

    Lower the vehicle.

  5. Remove the caps or plugs from the steering gear and hoses.
  6. Connect the hoses to the steering gear.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the hoses fittings to 28 N.m (20 lb ft).

  7. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement , in Steering Wheel and Column-Standard or Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column- Tilt.
  8. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
