Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform Powertrain ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK. See the BASIC TESTING article. Then go to next step.
- Install scan tool. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Scan injection timing at idle and at 1500 RPM using scan tool. If scan tool displays a difference of 5 degrees between actual and desired injection time at idle and at 1500 RPM, go to next step. If scan tool does not display a difference of 5 degrees between actual and desired injection time at idle and at 1500 RPM, go to step 4).
- DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If any additional DTCs are set, go to applicable DTC test.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Using DVOM, check resistance between coil 1 low and coil 1 high circuits of PCM harness connector. If resistance is 10-60 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 10-60 ohms, go to step 10).
- Using DVOM, check resistance between coil 2 low and coil 2 high circuits of PCM harness connector. If resistance is 10-60 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 10-60 ohms, go to step 9).
- Reconnect PCM harness connector. Disconnect injection timing stepper motor harness connector. Start and idle engine. Using scan tool, command time set on. Using DVOM, check for a varying voltage between ground and each terminal of injection timing stepper motor connector. If voltage varies, go to next step. If voltage does not vary, go to step 11).
- Disconnect crankshaft position sensor harness connector. Using DVOM, check resistance between crankshaft position sensor signal circuit and 5-volt reference circuit of crankshaft position sensor pigtail. If resistance is 950-1050 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 950-1050 ohms, go to step 12).
- Reconnect sensor harness connector. Check if injection timing is set correctly. Check for a sheared camshaft driven key. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If a problem was not found, go to step 15).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect stepper motor harness connector. Check for open in coil 1 low and coil 1 high circuits. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If circuits are okay, go to next step.
- Check for poor connections at injection timing stepper motor. Repair terminals as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If terminals are okay, go to step 15).
- Check for short to ground in any injection timing stepper motor circuits or for poor connections at PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If circuit or connection is okay, go to step 16).
- Check for short to ground in crankshaft position sensor pigtail. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If circuits are okay, go to step 14).
- Check for poor connection. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 17). If connection and terminals are okay, go to step 16).
- Replace crankshaft position sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step 17).
- Replace fuel injection pump. If fuel injection pump is replaced, new pump must be timed. See the ADJUSTMENTS article. After replacing pump, go to step 17).
- Replace PCM. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P0216. Operate vehicle within the conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2).
- Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
