Clutch Assembly: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Pontiac Firebird and 1994 Chevrolet Camaro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Position clutch disc with damper springs toward transmission and stamped letters FLYWHEEL SIDE toward flywheel. Use Clutch Arbor (J-33169 for V6) or (J-38836 for V8) to support and center clutch disc.
  2. Position pressure plate onto flywheel. Using a crisscross sequence, tighten pressure plate bolts gradually and evenly to prevent distortion. Lightly lubricate fork ends and ball stud socket of clutch release fork. Lubricate bearing recess and fork groove of release bearing.
  3. Install clutch release fork ends and retaining spring tabs into release bearing groove. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table at the end of this article.
CAUTION: Replace flywheel if damaged. DO NOT  resurface it.

  1. If flywheel was removed, install with crankshaft dowel pin at 11 o'clock position. Apply Loctite No. 262 to bolt threads. Tighten bolts to specification. See the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. Position clutch disc with damper springs toward transmission (side marked FLYWHEEL SIDE toward flywheel). Use Clutch Arbor(J-38836) to support and center clutch disc.
  3. Position pressure plate and cover assembly onto flywheel. Using a crisscross sequence, tighten pressure plate bolts gradually and evenly to prevent distortion. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. When installing clutch housing, ensure clutch release fork engages release bearing.
