"S" Models With Tilt Wheel: Disassembly

  1. Remove steering wheel and remove column from vehicle. Clamp in holding device (J-23074). Pry out shaft lock plate cover with screwdriver. Depress lock plate with tool (J-23653 & 23653-4). Remove retaining ring, shaft lock plate, cancelling cam and spring.
  2. Remove screw, signal switch arm, 3 screws and wire protector. Remove signal switch. Insert key and turn lock to "RUN". Remove lock retaining screw and pull out lock cylinder. Remove 3 screws and tap out pivot pin with punch. Remove spring, pivot/switch, lever, actuator and column cover.
  3. Reinstall lever and move column to full up position. Remove tilt spring retainer by pressing in on and turning retainer with screwdriver. See Figure. Remove pivot pins with puller (J-21854-01).
  4. Remove housing by pulling upward on tilt lever. Pull housing upward until it stops. Move housing to right to disengage rack from actuator. Remove tilt lever and all parts from top of column. See Fig 2.
  5. Remove steering column shaft from housing. Remove ignition, dimmer and back-up light switches from column. Remove screws, support, retaining rings, thrust washer, lock plate and wave washer. Remove gearshift bowl and shroud. See Fig 3. At bottom of column, remove clip, retainer, bearing and spring. Remove shift tube assembly with puller (J-23072).

    Remove and install parts as shown.
