All Models (1967-69): Disassembly

  1. Slide rubber grommet back from shift lever support housing, drive out selector lever pivot pin and remove shift lever (omit if floor shift). Remove steering wheel retaining nut and washer from shaft. Slide steering shaft from column assembly and remove back-up lamp switch. Remove three locking screws from directional signal housing and rotate housing to remove housing assembly. Remove spacer and thrust washer from shift lever housing and remove housing.
  2. Remove bushing and bushing seat from upper end of column assembly. Remove bolt and screws from adjusting ring clamp at lower end of column assembly. Remove clamp, lower bearing, and adjusting ring.
  3. NOTE: This step applies to vehicles without floor shift.

    On vehicles with manual transmission, remove 1st-Reverse shift lever. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove three screws from selector plate clamping ring. All models: Place column upright on floor while supporting with two pieces of wood. Push down on shift lever with foot and place block of wood on upper end of tube. Tap on block to remove tube and withdraw from column assembly. If removal is difficult, use a suitable press. Remove felt seal from shifter tube.

  4. Remove firewall clamp and seal, and dash panel seal from column assembly. Check all parts for excessive wear, rust and corrosion.
