Steering Column: Removal
WARNING:
DO NOT hammer, pry or force steering column and column shafts during installation or removal. Failure to follow this instruction may cause damage to steering components that could lead to loss of steering control during vehicle operation and could result in serious personal injury or death.
NOTE:
After Removing Steering Column, Use Original Box and Upper and Lower Packing Foams, to Protect Steering Column From Shipping Damage.
NOTE:
Precise tolerances are required when manufacturing a steering column. Never install a repaired, rebuilt, aftermarket, or remanufactured steering column. Always install a new steering column. Failure to follow this direction can result in steering column failure.
All vehicles
NOTE:
Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft system is disconnected or damage to the steering column electrical components may result.
NOTE:
LHD (left-hand drive) shown, RHD (right-hand drive) similar.
NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
- Depower the SRS Refer to: Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering .

NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove the SCCM. Refer to: Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) .

NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove the steering column shrouds. Refer to: Steering Column Shrouds .

NOTE: Make sure that the steering wheel does not rotate or damage to the clockspring may occur.
Secure the steering wheel.
- Position the steering column in the full up/rearward position.
- Remove the driver knee airbag. Refer to: Driver Knee Airbag .
- If equipped. Disconnect the SCLM electrical connector and unclip the harness.
- If equipped. Disconnect the deployable steering column electrical connector, unclip the harness and position the steering column harness aside.

WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).
Separate the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- Remove and discard the retainer.
- Separate the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
Torque: 30 Nm
- Remove and discard the retainers and remove the steering column.

Remove the steering column lock module. Refer to: Steering Column Lock Module (SCLM) .
