Axle Assembly: Removal

All vehicles
- Remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly. Refer to: Muffler and Tailpipe - 2.3L . Refer to: Muffler and Tailpipe - 5.0L . Refer to: Muffler And Tailpipe - 5.2L Supercharged . Refer to: Muffler and Tailpipe - 5.2L .
- Remove both rear halfshafts. Refer to: Rear Halfshaft .

- Index mark the driveshaft and the pinion flange for reference during installation.
- Remove and discard the driveshaft-to-pinion flange bolts.
Vehicles equipped with 5.2L Supercharged engine

- Index mark the driveshaft and the pinion flange for reference during installation.
- Remove and discard the driveshaft-to-pinion flange bolts and retaining straps.
All vehicles

NOTE: Do not remove driveshaft from the pinion flange by pulling on the driveshaft tube. Damage to the CV-joint can result.
- Support the driveshaft.
- Using a screwdriver inserted into the slot on the pinion flange, pry the driveshaft from the pinion flange. Use the General Equipment: Flat Headed Screw Driver
- Separate the driveshaft from the pinion flange.
- If equipped. Disconnect the differential fluid temperature sensor connector.
Vehicles equipped with 5.2L Supercharged engine
- Detach the retainer and disconnect the differential fluid temperature sensor connector.
All vehicles

- Remove the differential cooling return line retaining clip.
- Remove the differential cooling return line and position aside.

- Remove the differential cooling supply line retaining clip.
- Remove the differential cooling supply line and position aside.
- Disconnect the differential vent tube.

NOTE: The rear differential is heavy and will require to be supported by a transmission jack before the fasteners are removed.
Using a transmission jack, remove and discard the differential mounting bolts and remove the differential. Use the General Equipment: Transmission Jack
