Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2016 Ford Transit-350 HD, 2016 Ford Transit-350, 2016 Ford Transit-250, and 2016 Ford Transit-150. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
The ABS module uses internal solid state electronics to operate the hydraulic pump motor. The ABS module tests the hydraulic pump motor by activating it for 30 milliseconds. While the pump motor is activated, the ABS module monitors the voltage drop across the hydraulic pump motor. After 30 milliseconds have passed, the ABS module stops applying voltage to the pump motor and monitors the voltage the spinning hydraulic pump motor is generating and the voltage drop across the hydraulic pump motor solid state switch. If the monitored voltages are not within specifications, the ABS module sets a DTC.
PPT H ABS MODULE DTC FAULT TRIGGER CONDITIONS
| DTC | Description | Fault Trigger Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| C0020:16 | ABS Pump Motor Control: Circuit Voltage Below Threshold | Sets when the ABS module detects a voltage supply concern, a module ground concern, a shorted hydraulic pump motor or an internal failure of the ABS module. |
| C1B02:17 | Return Pump: Circuit Voltage Above Threshold | Sets when the ABS module detects a voltage supply concern, a module ground concern, a shorted hydraulic pump motor or an internal failure of the ABS module. |
| C1B02:71 | Return Pump: Actuator Stuck | Sets when the ABS module detects the hydraulic pump motor is shorted or seized. |
Possible Causes
- Fuse
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- HCU
- ABS module
Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
- Make sure the vehicle battery terminals and cables are free of any corrosion and other contaminants.
- Make sure the vehicle battery terminals are tightened to their correct torque specifications.
- Make sure AJB fuse 17 (40A) and the fuse socket are OK.
NOTE:
Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may cause damage to the connector.
CONNECTOR PIN REFERENCE (HARNESS SIDE)
| Circuit | Pin |
|---|---|
| B+ (Battery Positive Voltage) - SB113 | 25 (GRAY/RED) |
| GND (Ground) - GD187 | 13 (BLACK/GREEN) |
- H1: VERIFY ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS
- Ignition OFF.
- ABS Module connector disconnected. (C135)
- Using a good light source, inspect each connector terminal for the following:
- corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary
- Using a suitable mating terminal, check each connector terminal for deformed or enlarged contacts by comparing the mating terminal's fit between each of the following pins:
- C135-1
- C135-13
- Is the connector free of terminal corrosion, pushed-out terminals and spread terminals?
Yes No Go to H2. REPAIR the affected terminal. Refer to OEM Connector Repair Procedures , for schematic and connector information.
- H2: CHECK PUMP MOTOR OPERATION
- H3: CHECK FOR FAULT REPEATABILITY
- Clear the ABS DTCs.
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Test drive the vehicle at speeds greater than 20 km/h (12 mph).
- Bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
- Ignition OFF.
- Ignition ON, engine OFF.
- Carry out the ABS self-test.
- Is DTC C0020:xx or C1B02:xx present?
Yes No For all other ABS module DTCs, Go to the ABS Module DTC Chart.
For DTC C0020:xx or C1B02:xx, Go to H4.The concern causing the DTC is not present at this time.
DISCONNECT and INSPECT the ABS module electrical connector.
CLEAN or REPAIR the connector as necessary. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
- H4: CHECK THE PUMP MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO THE ABS MODULE
- Ignition OFF.
- ABS Module connector disconnected. (C135)NOTE: VERIFY AJB fuse 17 (40A) is OK. If not OK, REFER to the OEM Electrical Wiring Diagram Introduction to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- Measure the voltage between:
(+)
ABS Module (C135) Connector, Harness Side(-) B+ - SB113 (GRAY/RED) - Pin 25 Ground - Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
Yes No Go to H5. REPAIR the circuit.
- H5: CHECK THE ABS MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to the General Procedure in Charging System (Battery, Battery Mounting And Battery Cables) .
- Measure the resistance between:
(+)
ABS Module (C135) Connector, Harness Side(-) GND - GD187 (BLACK/GREEN) - Pin 13 Ground - Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
Yes No Go to H6. REPAIR the circuit.
- H6: VERIFY ALL WIRING CONNECTIONS
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect all in-line electrical connectors between the ABS module and the AJB.
- Using a good light source, inspect all disconnected electrical connectors for the following:
- corrosion - install new connector or terminal and clean the module pins
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals or pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- spread terminals - install new terminals as necessary
- Are the connectors free of corrosion, damaged pins, bent pins, pushed-out pins and spread terminals?
Yes No Go to H7. REPAIR the affected connectors or terminals.
REFER to OEM Connector Repair Procedures for schematic and connector information.
- H7: CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
- Connect all in-line electrical connectors between the ABS module and the AJB. Make sure the connectors seat and latch correctly.
- ABS Module connector connected. (C135) Make sure the connector seats and latches correctly.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to the General Procedure in Charging System (Battery, Battery Mounting And Battery Cables) .
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes No INSTALL a new ABS module.
CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins TSBs.
If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW the TSB instructions.
