Steering Column - Automatic Transmission: Assembly

All vehicles 

    NOTE: Lubricate the steering column lock lever actuators with the specified lubricant.
  1. Install the upper and lower steering column lock lever actuators.
    1. Install the upper steering column lock lever actuator.
    2. Install the lower steering column lock lever actuator.

  2. NOTE: Coat all surfaces with premium long-life grease.
  3. Install the steering column lock pawl.
    1. Position the steering column lock pawl.
    2. Drive in the steering column lock lever pin.

  4. Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    1. Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    2. Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

  5. NOTE: The upward position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.
    NOTE: Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.

  6. Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.
  7. Install the transmission control selector lever spring clip and the selector lever socket bushings on the shift tube.
    • Coat the selector lever socket bushings with the specified lubricant.

  8. Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
    • Coat the column shift selector plunger with the specified lubricant.

  9. Position the selector lever in the shift tube.

  10. NOTE: The selector lever pin must be installed correctly or 1st gear position may be blocked.

  11. Install the selector lever pin in the shift tube.
  12. Install the selector tube spring in the shift tube.
    • Coat the end of the spring with the specified lubricant.

  13. Install the transmission selector lever arm and support on the shift tube.
    1. Position the transmission selector lever arm and support.
    2. Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).

  14. Install the shift tube.
    1. Position the shift tube.
    2. Position the 2 shift tube clamps.
    3. Install the 4 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

  15. NOTE: If installing a new transmission shift selector position insert, make sure that the correct part is being installed.
  16. Install the brake shift interlock solenoid and the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

  17. NOTE: Install the upper steering column bearing (small) so that the inner race is visible when installed.

  18. Using an appropriate bearing installer or socket, install the small steering column upper bearing into the ignition lock cylinder housing.

    Vehicles with tilt column 

  19. NOTE: Install the bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
    NOTE: Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.

  20. Install the steering column lower bearing (large) into the ignition lock cylinder housing.

    All vehicles 

  21. Position the steering column shaft in the ignition lock cylinder housing.
    • Install the steering column upper bearing tolerance ring onto the steering column shaft.

  22. Install the steering column upper bearing sleeve.

  23. Install the steering column upper bearing spring.

  24. Install the steering column upper bearing snap ring.

  25. Install the turn signal cancel cam.

  26. Install the 2 ignition lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
    • Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder housing and screws with the specified lubricant.

  27. NOTE: Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder housing bushings with the specified lubricant.
    NOTE: Tilt column shown in illustration, fixed column similar.
  28. Position the ignition lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft on the steering actuator housing.
    • Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.

  29. Position the LH and RH steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
    1. Use a shop fabricated tool.
    2. For tilt columns, install and compress the steering column position spring.

  30. Position the ignition lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing.
    • Tighten the 2 ignition lock cylinder housing screws to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

  31. Install the steering column lower bearing tolerance ring.

  32. Install the sensor ring.
    1. Install the sensor ring.
    2. Install the steering column lower bearing spring.

  33. Install the ignition switch.
    1. Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.
    2. Install the 2 ignition switch screws and tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).

  34. NOTE: The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear must be in the 1 o'clock position.
  35. Install the ignition lock cylinder gear.
    • Coat the gear with the specified lubricant.

  36. Install the ignition lock cylinder bearing.
    • The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the 1 o'clock position, with the tab inboard at the 3 o'clock position and rotate it counterclockwise.
    • Lubricate the ignition lock cylinder bearing with the specified lubricant.

  37. Install the ignition lock cylinder bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing.

  38. Install the selector lever and the selector lever pin.
  39. Install the clockspring. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  40. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to STEERING COLUMN .
