Pinpoint Test

NOTE: If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or access the transmission Parameter Identifications (PIDs), REFER to INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE MODELS .
  1. Read and record all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
    1. Install the scan tool and record all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
      • Were Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0770 and/or P0773 set?
      1. Yes:  GO to 2  on page 2.
      2. No:  REFER to SYMPTOM CHART: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 6F50 AND 6F55 .
  2. Check the Shift Solenoid E (SSE) circuit for an open
    1. Ignition OFF.
    2. Disconnect the transaxle vehicle harness C168.
    3. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175T.
    4. Inspect the connectors for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.
    5. Measure the resistance of circuit CET19 (VT/GY) from the transaxle vehicle harness C168-1 to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) C175T-11.

      • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
      1. Yes:  GO to 3  on page 3.
      2. No:  REPAIR circuit CET19 (VT/GY) for an open. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. Check the Shift Solenoid E (SSE) circuit for a short to ground

      • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
      1. Yes:  GO to 4  on page 3.
      2. No:  REPAIR circuit CET19 (VT/GY) for a short to ground. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. Check the Shift Solenoid E (SSE) circuit for a short to voltage
    1. Ignition ON.
    2. Measure for voltage on circuit CET19 (VT/GY) from the transaxle vehicle harness C168-1 to ground.

      • Is any voltage present?
      1. Yes:  REPAIR circuit CET19 (VT/GY) for a short to voltage. CLEAR the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). TEST the system for normal operation.
      2. No:  GO to 5  on page 4.
  5. Check the Shift Solenoid E (SSE) for a short to ground
    1. Measure the resistance between the transaxle internal harness connector, terminal 1 and ground.

      • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
      1. Yes:  REMOVE the main control cover. REFER to MAIN CONTROL COVER . INSPECT the solenoid body for foreign material such as metal shavings on the exposed metal contacts or other components. CLEAR the solenoid body and RECHECK the resistance value. If the resistance value is out of specification and a short to ground is not found, INSTALL a new solenoid body assembly. REFER to SOLENOID BODY ASSEMBLY . PERFORM the Solenoid Body Strategy Data Download procedure. REFER to Solenoid Body Strategy Download. TEST the system for normal operation.
      2. No:  GO to 6  on page 5.
  6. Check the Shift Solenoid E (SSE) for an open
    1. Measure the resistance between the transaxle internal harness, terminal 1 and terminal 15 component side.
