Pinpoint Test
- RETRIEVE Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) FROM THE Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST
- Ignition ON.
- Using a scan tool, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Key ON Engine OFF (KOEO) self-test to retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- Are any charging system Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)?
- Yes: REFER to DTC CHART: POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) for diagnosis of charging system Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
- No: GO to step 2 .
- CHECK BATTERY CONDITION
- Ignition OFF.
- Carry out the battery condition test. REFER to DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE A .
- Does the battery pass the condition test?
- Yes:
If the battery passed the condition test but required a recharge, REFER to SYMPTOM CHART: CHARGING SYSTEM
to diagnose the charging system.
If the battery passed the condition test and did not require a recharge, GO to step 3 .
- No: INSTALL a new battery. REFER to BATTERY .
- CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM VOLTAGE
- Start the engine.
- Measure the voltage of the battery.
NOTE: Do not allow the engine rpm to exceed 2,000 rpm while carrying out this step or the generator may self-excite, resulting in default charging system output voltage. If engine rpm has exceeded 2,000 rpm, shut the vehicle off and restart the engine before carrying out this step.- For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B11D9:17, turn off all accessories and run the engine at 1,500 rpm for a minimum of 2 minutes.
- For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B11D9:16, turn on headlights and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) fan on high and run engine at 1,500 rpm for a minimum of 2 minutes.
- Is the battery voltage between 13-15.2 volts?
- Yes:
For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B11D9:16, GO to step 4
.
For Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B11D9:17, INSTALL a new All Terrain Control Module (ATCM). REFER to ALL TERRAIN CONTROL MODULE (ATCM) .
- No: REFER to SYMPTOM CHART: CHARGING SYSTEM to diagnose the charging system.
- CHECK THE All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: All Terrain Control Module (ATCM).
- START engine.
- Measure:
Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
- Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
- Yes: GO to step 5 .
- No: REPAIR circuit CBP35 (YE/GY) for high resistance.
- CHECK THE All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) GROUND CIRCUIT FOR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Ignition OFF.
- Measure:
Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
- Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?
- Yes: GO to step 6 .
- No: REPAIR circuit GD214 (BK/BU) for high resistance.
- CHECK FOR CORRECT All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) OPERATION
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect and inspect All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) connector.
- Repair:
- corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
- Reconnect the All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly.
- Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes: CHECK On-Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS) for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new All Terrain Control Module (ATCM). REFER to All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) .
- No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. Address the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
