Steering Gear: Removal

NOTE: When repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of foreign material or failure of the power steering components may result.
    NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter® 28-75-1 or equivalent).

  1. Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Remove the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES
  3. Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt and disconnect the steering column shaft from the steering gear.
  4. Mark the subframe position for reference during installation.
  5. Remove the RH front fender splash shield. For additional information, refer to FRONT END BODY PANELS
  6. Remove the 7 screws, 3 pin-type retainers and the lower radiator air deflector.
  7. Remove the 3 RH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts and washers.

  8. Remove the 3 LH subframe-to-lower bumper nuts and washers and separate the bumper from the subframe.

  9. Remove the power steering fluid cooler-to-subframe bolt.
  10. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM
  11. NOTE: Use the holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing the stabilizer bar link nuts.
  12. Remove and discard the 2 stabilizer bar link nuts and disconnect the stabilizer bar links from the stabilizer bar.
  13. Remove and discard the 2 outer tie-rod end cotter pins and nuts.
  14. Using the Tie-Rod End Remover, separate the outer tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.

  15. Remove the 2 nuts and the roll restrictor heat shield.
  16. Remove the roll restrictor-to-subframe bolt.
  17. Support the subframe using the Powertrain Lift.
  18. NOTE: LH shown in illustration, RH similar.
  19. Remove the 2 subframe bracket bolts and the crossbrace.
    • Discard the bolts.

  20. Remove the 2 remaining subframe bracket bolts, the 2 subframe bracket nuts and the subframe support brackets.
    • Discard the nuts and bolts.

  21. Remove and discard the 2 forward subframe nuts.

  22. Remove and discard the 2 middle subframe nuts.

  23. Lower the subframe approximately 101 mm (3.976 in).
  24. Position the stabilizer bar upward to allow clearance to remove the steering gear.
  25. Remove the pressure line-to-steering gear banjo bolt.
    • Discard the banjo bolt and 2 seals.
  26. Remove the 2 steering gear heat shield bolts and the steering gear heat shield.
  27. Remove the 4 return hose bracket bolts.
  28. Release the clamp and disconnect the return hose from the steering gear.
  29. Remove and discard the 4 steering gear bolts and remove the steering gear.
