Overdrive Planetary Gears: Disassembly

    NOTE: Individual parts of the planetary carriers are not serviceable.
  1. Before installing a planetary assembly, the shaft retaining pins should be checked for adequate staking. Check the pins and shafts in the planetary assemblies for loose fit and/or complete disengagement. Install a new planetary assembly if necessary.

  3. Inspect the pinion gears for damaged or excessively worn teeth and for free rotation.

  5. Inspect the Overdrive (O/D) One-Way Clutch (OWC) inner race and the inner and outer races for scored or damaged surface areas where the rollers contact the races.

  7. Remove and inspect the No. 2 O/D planetary thrust bearing on the nose of the O/D planetary gear carrier assembly.

    NOTE: Inspect the sun gear for damaged or worn teeth.
  9. Remove the coast clutch-to-O/D carrier adapter.

  11. Remove and inspect the O/D sun gear.

    NOTE: Do not attempt to remove the No. 12 bearing from behind the pinion gears or transmission damage can occur.
  13. Inspect the No. 12 bearing for damage.
