Inspection and Verification: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mercury Sable and 2005 Ford Taurus. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Switch(es)
    • Instrument cluster
    • Smart junction box (SJB)
    • Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s):
      • 1 (60A)
      • 3 (60A)
    • SJB fuse(s):
      • 22 (15A)
      • 32 (10A)
      • 33 (15A)
    • Circuitry
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool's operating manual.
  6. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN or ISO circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    • No response/not equipped for the instrument cluster, refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . For smart junction box (SJB), refer to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self test diagnostics for the instrument cluster and for the SJB.
  7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX  or the SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX  to continue diagnostics.
  8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the SYMPTOM CHART .
