Removal and Installation
CAUTION:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD in this article.
- Remove the push rods. For additional information, refer to VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW and PUSH ROD in this article.
- Remove the 4 tappet guide plate bolts and the 2 tappet guide plates.
- Remove the valve tappets.
- Inspect the valve tappets. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
CAUTION:
If the valve tappets are to be reused, they must be installed in their original location. Mark the valve tappets for location before removing.
NOTE:
Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil.
