Cylinder Head - RH: Installation

  1. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
  2. Install the new cylinder head gasket and the LH cylinder head.
  3. CAUTION: Always use new bolts.
    NOTE: Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  4. Install the new bolts. Make sure the bolts are installed in the correct locations.
    1. Install the 4 new long bolts.
    2. Install the 4 new short bolts.

  5. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 3 stages.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

  6. CAUTION: Each bolt must be loosened and the final tightening carried out prior to working on the next bolt in the sequence. Do not loosen all of the bolts at one time.
  7. Carry out the following final tightening process on each bolt in the sequence shown.
    • Long bolts:
      • Loosen and back out 3 turns.
      • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
      • Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
      • Go to the next bolt in sequence.
    • Short bolts:
      • Loosen and back out 3 turns.
      • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
      • Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
      • Go to the next bolt in sequence.

  8. Install the LH exhaust manifold lower studs.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  9. Connect the KS electrical connector.
  10. Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
  11. Position the engine roll restrictor bracket and install the 4 bolts.
    • Tighten the 2 upper bolts to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
    • Tighten the 2 lower bolts to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

  12. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket brace, 2 upper bolts and generator mounting bracket to the engine as an assembly.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  13. Install the 2 A/C compressor mounting bracket brace lower bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  14. Install the generator brace bolt.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  15. Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley. For additional information, refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE .
  16. Install the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR .
  17. Install the push rods from the LH cylinder head. For additional information, refer to PUSH ROD  in this article.
  18. Install the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD  in this article.
  19. Install the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - LH  in this article.
  20. Drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).

  21. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
  22. NOTE: Lubricate the new engine oil filter seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  23. Install a new engine oil filter.
    • Tighten the engine oil filter one half turn after the gasket makes contact with the oil filter housing.
  24. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.


  1. Clean the cylinder head bolt holes in the cylinder block. Make sure all coolant, oil or other foreign material is removed.
  2. Install the new cylinder head gasket and the RH cylinder head.
  3. CAUTION: Always use new bolts.
    NOTE: Lubricate the bolts with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  4. Install the new bolts. Make sure the bolts are installed in the correct locations.
    1. Install the 4 new long bolts.
    2. Install the 4 new short bolts.

  5. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 3 stages.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    • Stage 3: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

  6. CAUTION: Each bolt must be loosened and the final tightening carried out prior to working on the next bolt in the sequence. Do not loosen all of the bolts at one time.
  7. Carry out the following final tightening process on each bolt in the sequence shown.
    • Long bolts:
      • Loosen and back out 3 turns.
      • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
      • Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
      • Go to the next bolt in sequence.
    • Short bolts:
      • Loosen and back out 3 turns.
      • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
      • Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
      • Go to the next bolt in sequence.

  8. Install the RH exhaust manifold lower studs.
    • Tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

  9. Position the engine wiring harness bracket and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  10. Position the power steering mounting bracket and install the bolt.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  11. Install the 2 power steering mounting bracket bolts.
    • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  12. Install the power steering mounting bracket bolt.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  13. Position the power steering pump and install the 4 bolts.
    • Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  14. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner. For additional information, refer to ACCESSORY DRIVE .
  15. Install the coolant pump outlet tube and the 2 bolts.
    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  16. Install the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD  in this article.
  17. Install the push rods in the RH cylinder head. For additional information, refer to PUSH ROD  in this article.
  18. Install the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH  in this article.
  19. Drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug and tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).

  20. Remove and discard the engine oil filter.
  21. NOTE: Lubricate the new engine oil filter seal with clean engine oil prior to installation.
  22. Install a new engine oil filter.
    • Tighten one half turn after gasket makes contact with oil filter housing.
  23. Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
