    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Remove the steering column shaft bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).

  3. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Remove the bolts and the battery tray.
    • To install, tighten to 12 Nm 9 (lb-ft).

  5. Remove the intake air hose.
    1. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
    2. Loosen the clamps.
      • To install, tighten to 4 Nm (35 lb-in).
    3. Remove the intake air hose.

  6. Remove the bolts and the resonator.
    • To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).

  7. Early production vehicles 

  8. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Press the locking tab, then detach the shift cable from the shift lever.
    2. Press the locking tab, then detach the selector cable from the selector lever.

  9. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the bracket.
    1. Detach the shift cable from the retaining bracket by turning the abutment sleeve counterclockwise.
    2. Detach the selector cable from the retaining bracket by turning the abutment sleeve counterclockwise.

  10. Late production vehicles 

  11. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Press the locking tab, then detach the shift cable from the shift lever.
    2. Press the locking tab, then detach the selector cable from the selector lever.

  12. Disconnect the gearshift cables from the bracket.
    1. Detach the shift cable from the retaining bracket by pulling the abutment sleeve rearward.
    2. Detach the selector cable from the retaining bracket by pulling the abutment sleeve rearward.

  13. All vehicles 

  14. Remove the bolt and the power steering line clamp.

  15. Disconnect the hydraulic clutch line and grommet from the retaining bracket.
  16. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and the catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connectors. Remove the 2 nuts and the sensor bracket.

  17. Install the special tools.

  18. Remove the nuts and the rear engine mount.
    • To install, tighten the center nut to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).
    • Tighten the outer nuts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  19. Remove the 3 bolts and the rear engine mount bracket.
    • To install, tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

  20. Disconnect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.

  21. Disconnect the wire harness connectors, then remove the bolt retaining the wiring harness bracket.
  22. Remove the upper transmission-to-engine bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  23. Raise the vehicle.
  24. Remove the tire and wheels. For additional information, refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .
  25. Remove the engine roll restrictor.
    • To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  26. Remove the tie-rod end nuts.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  27. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.

  28. Remove the nuts and separate the lower control arms from the wheel knuckles.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).

  29. Remove the nuts and separate the stabilizer bar links from the strut.
    • To install, tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

  30. Remove the bolt, then disconnect the power steering lines from the steering gear.
    • To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).

  31. NOTE: Index-mark the subframe to the chassis.
  32. Position a suitable lifting device under the subframe. Remove the 6 subframe bolts.
    • To install rear subframe bolts, tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
    • To install front subframe bolts, tighten to 115 Nm(85 lb-ft).

  33. Lower the subframe from the vehicle.

  34. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  35. Remove the locknuts and the intermediate shaft center bearing cap. Discard the locknuts and cap.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  36. NOTE: Use care removing the halfshaft, the splines on the halfshaft can damage the halfshaft seal. Do not let the halfshafts hang unsupported.

  37. Remove the RH halfshaft from the transmission. Position it aside and secure it with mechanic's wire.
  38. NOTE: Use care removing the halfshaft. Splines on the halfshaft can damage the halfshaft seal. Do not let the halfshafts hang unsupported.

  39. Using the special tool and a suitable slide hammer, remove the LH halfshaft from the transmission. Position it aside and secure it with mechanic's wire.
  40. Loosen the starter bolts, but do not remove the starter.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  41. Remove the clip, then disconnect the clutch hydraulic line.

  42. Position a suitable jack to the transmission. Secure the transmission to the jack. Remove the 10 transaxle-to-engine bolts. Pull the transaxle rearward until the input shaft is clear of the pressure plate, then lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
    • To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
