AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS SYMPTOM CHART

Condition	Possible Sources	Action
The shift interlock system does not release/lock correctly	Circuit(s). Fuse(s). Shift lock actuator. Brake pedal position (BPP) switch.	GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
The shift control is out of correct gear relationship	Transmission shift cable and bracket. Shift cable retention to steering column bracket. Shift control linkage.	GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
The transmission range indicator does not correspond to the gear	Transmission shift cable bracket.	TIGHTEN the bolts holding the transmission shift cable bracket.
	Shift control indicator linkage.	ADJUST PRNDL indicator at steering housing.
	Transmission shift cable loose from the transmission retainer bracket.	VERIFY the transmission shift cable is seated in the transmission retainer bracket.
	Shift cable adjustment incorrect.	VERIFY the transmission shift cable adjustment. REFER to GENERAL PROCEDURES . ADJUST the transmission shift cable if necessary.
The transmission range indicator lamp does not illuminate	Bulb. Circuit(s).	REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND PANEL ILLUMINATION .
The transmission control (TC) switch/indicator lamp is not operating correctly	Fuse. TC switch not cycled during self-test. Powertrain control module. Circuit(s).	GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
