Removal and Installation

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages, or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
  1. Remove the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Remove the rocker arms. For additional information, refer to ROCKER ARM .
  3. Remove the push rods.
  4. Remove the 4 tappet guide plate bolts and the 2 tappet guide plates.
    5. CAUTION: If the valve tappets are to be reused, they must be installed in their original location. Mark the valve tappets for location before removing.
  5. Remove the valve tappets.
  6. Inspect the valve tappets. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
    7. NOTE: Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
