Park System: Installation

    All vehicles 

  1. Using petroleum jelly to hold the bearing or bushing in place, install the output shaft bearing for slip yoke models and the bushing for fixed yoke models.

  2. CAUTION: Be careful when installing the output shaft not to damage the seals.

  3. If the output shaft was removed, install the output shaft and park gear assembly.
  4. Install the park pawl shaft.
    1. Install the park pawl shaft.
    2. Install the park pawl.
    3. Install the park pawl return spring.

  5. Install the parking rod guide plate.
    1. Install the parking rod guide plate.
    2. Install the bolts.

  6. Install a new extension housing gasket.

  7. Install the extension housing and the nine bolts.

  8. Vehicles equipped with a fixed yoke 

  9. Using the special tool, install a new output shaft nut.

  10. All vehicles 

  11. Connect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector.

  12. Lower the transmission onto the rear mount and install the bolts.

  13. Vehicles equipped with a fixed yoke 

  14. If equipped, install the output shaft flange.
    1. Install the output shaft flange.
    2. Install a new bolt.

  15. 4x2 vehicles 

  16. Install the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVESHAFT .
  17. 4x4 vehicles 

  18. Install the transfer case. For additional information, refer to TRANSFER CASE .
  19. All vehicles 

  20. Start the engine. Move the transmission range selector lever through all the gear ranges, checking for engagements.
  21. CAUTION: The use of any other transmission fluid than specified can result in the transmission failing to operate in a normal manner or transmission failure.
  22. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, engine running and the transmission at normal operating temperature 66-77°C (150-170°F), check and adjust the transmission fluid level, and check for any leaks. If fluid is needed, add fluid in increments of 0.24 liter (0.5 pint) until the correct level is achieved (fluid should be in the cross-hatched area of the fluid level indicator).
