Forward Clutch Assembly: Disassembly

NOTE: Soak all friction clutch plates in clean automatic transmission fluid.
  1. Remove and discard the two seals and remove the No. 7 thrust washer.

  2. Remove the No. 8 forward clutch thrust bearing.

  3. Remove the snap ring and the forward clutch plates.

  4. Using the special tools, remove the snap ring.

  5. NOTE: Note the orientation of the return spring.

  6. Remove the forward clutch balance piston and the return spring. Discard the forward clutch balance piston.
  7. Remove and discard the forward clutch piston.

  8. Clean and inspect all components for damage.
  9. NOTE: The later production forward clutch cylinder can be used in place of the early production cylinders. The later production cylinder will accept the early production clutch plates.
  10. Inspect the forward clutch cylinder.
    1. The early production forward clutch cylinder has small direct clutch feed holes and a smaller bore clearance.
    2. The later production forward clutch cylinder has larger direct clutch feed holes and a larger bore clearance.
