Steering Column - Console Shift: Disassembly

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the steering column removal and installation procedure.

  1. All vehicles

    Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to Steering Column .
  2. Remove the tilt wheel handle shank.

  3. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
    1. Remove the three screws.
    2. Remove the lower steering column shroud.

  4. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    1. Position the ignition switch lock cylinder to the RUN position.
    2. Using a suitable tool, push upward on the cylinder release tab while pulling the ignition switch lock cylinder outward.

  5. Remove the upper steering column shroud.

  6. Remove the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transmitter.
    1. Remove the PATS transmitter retaining screw.
    2. Position the PATS transmitter out of the way.

  7. Remove the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch.

  8. Remove the bolt and separate the ground wire.

  9. Remove the clockspring wire harness from the two holders (one shown).

  10. Release the lower clockspring retaining clip.

  11. Remove the clockspring.
    1. Release the remaining two clockspring retaining clips.
    2. Remove the clockspring.

  12. CAUTION: Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer prior to removal.

  13. Remove the ignition switch.
    1. Remove the ignition switch bolts.
    2. Remove the ignition switch.
  14. Remove the bearing retainer.

  15. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing.

  16. Remove the steering column lock gear.

  17. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Remove the snap ring from the bottom of the steering column shaft.

  18. Vehicles with tilt steering columns

    Remove the sensor ring.
    1. Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
    2. Remove the sensor ring.

  19. All vehicles

    Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft.

  20. Remove the multifunction switch.
    1. Remove the screws.
    2. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    3. Remove the multifunction switch.

  21. Vehicles with tilt steering columns

    Remove the lock cylinder housing screws.

  22. Vehicles with fixed steering columns

    Remove the two lock cylinder housing screws and the steering column spacer.

  23. WARNING: The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

  24. All vehicles
    Remove the lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.
    1. Pry up on the steering column lock left hand levers using a shop fabricated tool.
    2. On tilt steering columns, remove the steering column position spring.
  25. Remove the turn signal cancel cam.

  26. Remove the snap ring.

  27. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.

  28. Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.

  29. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
    1. Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing, then out.
    2. Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring off the steering column shaft.

  30. Using a suitable punch, remove the steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    Use a suitable punch to remove the steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.

    Remove the steering column bearing and sleeve.

  33. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
    1. Remove the three bolts.
    2. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.

  34. Remove the upper steering column lock lever actuator and the lower steering column lock lever actuator.
