Inner CV Joint: Disassembly

NOTE: The right axle shaft with a M/T does not have an inboard retaining circlip.
  1. Remove the axle shaft bearing retainer circlip from the inboard joint housing and discard. See Figure . Remove the 2 inboard axle shaft joint boot clamps and discard.
  2. Place axle shaft in soft-jawed vise. Separate the inboard axle shaft joint boot from the inboard joint housing. Remove the inboard joint housing from the tripod bearing and axle shaft.
  3. Remove the tripod bearing snap ring. See Fig 1 . Mark the tripod bearing to the axle shaft for reference to ensure correct installation. See Fig 2 . Remove the tripod bearing from the axle shaft.
    4. NOTE: Do not remove the tape wrap until after assembly.
  4. Tape the axle shaft splines to avoid damage to the axle shaft joint boot. See Figure . Slide the axle shaft joint boot off of the axle shaft. Clean and inspect the tripod bearing and outboard joint housing for cracks, pitting or scoring. If components are cracked, broken, pitted or worn, replace complete assembly.
