Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Marauder, 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis, and 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Clockspring is located on steering column between steering wheel and combination switch. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove driver-side air bag module and steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Apply 2 strips of masking tape across clockspring to prevent accidental rotation. See Figure. Place steering column in full down position. Twist tilt wheel handle and shank and remove.
  3. Remove 4 screws and lower steering column shroud. Position ignition lock cylinder in RUN position. Using small drift, push upward on lock cylinder release tab while pulling clock cylinder outward. See Figure. Remove upper steering column shroud.
  4. Release voice-activated cellular phone microphone retaining tab and remove microphone, if equipped. Remove passive anti-theft transmitter retaining screw and remove transmitter. Remove key-in warning indicator switch.
  5. Remove clockspring electrical connectors from retaining bracket. Disconnect remaining clockspring connector. Separate clockspring wiring harness from harness retainers and side of steering column. Pry clockspring retaining clips loose and remove clockspring. See Figure.
