Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Installation
NOTE:
Prior to installation of the transaxle assembly, the torque converter pilot hub must be properly lubricated. Use Ford Multi-Purpose Grease (DOAZ-19584-AA) or equivalent meeting Ford specification (ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-B). Align the torque converter studs to the flywheel.
- Secure the transaxle on hi-lift transaxle jack. Raise the transaxle to the proper height and position the transaxle to the engine. See Figure .
- Install the middle transaxle to engine bolts. See Figure . Tighten to bolts specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the 4 flywheel to converter retaining nuts. Tighten to nuts specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the housing cover and bolts. See Figure . Tighten to bolts specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the A/C line to the retainer located on the front of the engine support crossmember. Install the transaxle support crossmember. Install the transaxle support crossmember bolts and nuts (1). Install the rear engine isolator nuts (2). Install the front engine isolator nuts (3). See Figure . Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the three-way catalytic converter with NEW gaskets. Install right and lower splash shields. Install the drain plug with a NEW washer. See Figure . Tighten plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) to the wire clip.
- Install the drive shafts. See AXLE SHAFTS - FRONT article in DRIVELINE/AXLES. Lower the vehicle. Install the starter motor.
- Install the 2 upper transaxle to engine bolts. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the left engine support insulator nuts and washers. See Figure . Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Connect the fluid cooler lines to the transaxle. See Figure .
- Remove Three-Bar Engine Support. See Figure .
- Connect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector. See Figure .
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector. See Figure .
- Connect the (1) transaxle range selector electrical connector, the (2) transaxle solenoid electrical connector and the (3) turbine signal sensor electrical connector. See Figure .
- Install the shift cable and bracket nut to the manual control shift lever. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install the shift cable and bracket clip. See Figure .
