Removal & Installation
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Fuel must be drained from fuel tank before proceeding. See FUEL TANK DRAINING .
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove bolts and nuts retaining exhaust heat shield to exhaust system. Loosen, but DO NOT remove, left and right fuel tank support strap bolts. Lower straps and fuel tank approximately 1". Lower vehicle. Use the following procedures for appropriate fuel pump module removal:
- Fuel Pump Delivery Module
To remove FPDM (right saddle tank fuel pump module), disconnect electrical connector to FPDM. Using Fuel Sender Wrench (310-069), remove FPDM retainer ring. Partially lift FPDM and separate fuel filter from module by cutting tie strap. Position FPDM flange clear of fuel tank opening. Press lock tabs and release FPDM from tank mounting flange. Remove FPDM from fuel tank. Siphon any remaining fuel out of fuel tank. - Fuel Transfer Pump
To remove fuel transfer pump (left saddle tank fuel pump module), disconnect electrical connector to fuel transfer pump. Using Fuel Sender Wrench (310-069), remove fuel transfer pump retainer ring. Remove fuel transfer pump from fuel tank.
NOTE: FPDM will contain some residual fuel. Lift straight up and out of retainer cup and tilt while in tank (float side down) to drain residual fuel out of reservoir. Then straighten and lift straight up and out of tank. Drain excess fuel into suitable container. - Fuel Pump Delivery Module
- To install FPDM or fuel transfer pump, NEW module assembly flange gaskets must be used. Align module with in-tank retaining bracket and push down on module until latches snap into position onto bracket. Tighten fuel pump retainer ring(s) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure fuel line tubes are fully seated into outlet and crossover line connector fittings. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all heat shield and fuel tank bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill fuel tank. Perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE under EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM.
NOTE:
Both sides of fuel tank must be drained individually to ensure all possible fuel is removed.
NOTE:
Removal of fuel tank is not necessary to carry out this procedure. Both fuel pump modules can be accessed through fuel pump module access covers.
