Grid Filament Repair
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Mustang. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Any single or combination of breaks in one grid totaling more than 1" (25 mm) in length cannot be repaired. If the first layer of grid (Brown) is damaged or missing, apply Dark Walnut Metallic Acrylic Lacquer Touch-Up Paint (ALBZ-19500-5858A) or equivalent before making repairs.
- Ensure vehicle is at room temperature. Ensure repair area is free of all dirt, wax, grease, oil, or other foreign matter. Clean area using a non-alcohol based window cleaner.
- Mark location of break on outside of window. Using cellulose tape, mask area directly above and below break. See Fig 1. Break should be at center of mask and gap between tape must not be wider than width of grid.
- Apply Rear Window Defroster Repair (D8AZ-19562-AA) in several smooth continuous strokes, allowing 5 minutes drying time between coats. Extend coating at least 1/4" (6 mm) beyond both sides of break. Allow 5 minutes to dry, then remove tape.
- Inspect outside appearance of repair. If repair compound is visible above or below grid line, remove excess compound. To do so, place single-edge razor blade parallel to grid and scrape gently toward grid. Repair will air dry in about one minute and can be energized after 3 minutes. Optimum hardness occurs after 24 hours.
