Self-Diagnostic System

NOTE: Before beginning self-diagnostics, perform TROUBLE SHOOTING .

NOTE: A Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester is required to test the system. All Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) tests are for use with WDS or NGS tester.

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) tester or New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC), DLC is located below instrument panel. See Fig 1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform data link diagnostics test. See DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article. If WDS or NGS tester responds with CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70=ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, repair module communications concern. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article. If WDS or NGS tester displays NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Generic Electronic Module (GEM), perform TEST A: NO COMMUNICATION WITH GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under SYSTEM TESTS.

If WDS or NGS tester responds with SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Erase continuous DTCs. Using WDS or NGS tester, perform GEM self-test. Perform appropriate test in accordance to DTC retrieved. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE DTC INDEX table. Codes listed in this table are only for testing covered in this article. For complete DTC listing, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article. If no DTCs are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.

⁽²⁾	Using WDS or NGS tester, retrieve and document all continuous DTCs. Perform Generic Electronic Module (GEM) self-test. If DTC B1342 is retrieved again, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
