Cylinder Head: Installation

  1. Rotate the crankshaft to position the keyway at 12 o'clock.

  2. CAUTION: The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder block must be clean. For additional information, refer to the REMOVAL  portion of this procedure.
    CAUTION: The use of sealing aids (aviation cement, copper spray, and glue) is not permitted. The gasket must be installed dry.
    NOTE: The RH head gasket is shown; the LH head gasket is similar.

  3. Install the head gasket over the dowel pins.
  4. CAUTION: Cylinder head machining or milling is not authorized by the Ford Motor Company. Cylinder head flatness must be within 0.0254 mm (0.001 in) across a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) square area.
    NOTE: The four center bolts must be installed in the cylinder head before positioning the cylinder head in the vehicle. To install the cylinder head without damaging the gasket or the gasket mating surface, lift the bolts slightly above the cylinder head gasket mating surface and hold in place using a rubber band.

  5. Install the cylinder head on the head gasket and loosely install the bolts.
    • The LH is shown, RH is similar.
  6. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in three stages.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 40Nm (30 lb-ft).
    • Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
    • Stage 3: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

  7. Install the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD RH .
  8. Install the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD LH .
  9. Install the timing chain. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS .
