Trouble Shooting

NOTE: For trouble shooting procedures not listed, see POWERTRAIN in BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Check the operation of the clutch by laying a block of wood approximately 0.984" (25 mm), thick under the clutch pedal and depress the clutch pedal as far as the stop. If 1st or 2nd gear can be selected, with no problem, with the engine running and the parking brake applied, the clutch is okay. If either gear cannot be selected, repair the clutch. See CLUTCH ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

Check the selector mechanism The free play in the gearshift lever must be no more than 0.60" (15 mm). If the gearshift lever free play is too great, check the gearshift cables and replace them if necessary. If the gearshift lever free play is OK, adjust the gearshift linkage. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. Check the transmission fluid level. Fill transaxle to proper level with appropriate fluid. See SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS.

Verify the customer concern by operating the system. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible). If the concern is not evident, diagnose by symptom. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  .
