Removal & Installation: Compressor: Removal

  1. Recover refrigerant using an approved refrigerant recovery system. See RECOVERY, EVACUATION & RECHARGING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in GENERAL SERVICING. Measure the amount of oil lost during recovery and record.
  2. Remove the drive belt. See Fig 1 .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Disconnect the engine harness from the compressor. Disconnect engine harness from pulley. See Fig 2 .
  5. On 3.0L models, disconnect the oxygen sensor from the engine harness. See Fig 3 .
  6. On 3.0L models, remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust.
  7. Loosen the bolt that secures the compressor hose assembly to the compressor by 7-8 turns, and remove the block from the compressor by moving the block forward, then up. See Fig 4
  8. Remove and discard the sealing washers.
  9. Install the shipping cap on the compressor hose assembly to prevent moisture or contamination.
  10. Install the compressor shipping cap before removal to prevent oil spillage and contamination.
  11. Remove the bolts that secure the compressor to the engine block. See Fig 5 . Remove the compressor.
